Sony patents new "ad delivery system", loading screen advertising Big Macs coming soon!

Recommended Posts

Ok so maybe the Big Mac ads aren't coming soon, but it's still kind of making me a little angry knowing it could come to that.

Even worse than that. Imagine you're playing a game. Let's say a racing game. You're in the zone, furiously trying to fight for first place. (All following pictures, except the doggy, taken from actual Sony patent application)

You go to make a pass in between two other cars and suddenly it's like you're in the Matrix as the gameplay slows down to a crawl.

What the ****? I've never seen this before.

No folks. I'm not kidding about any of this. Sony has patented what they are calling "Advertisement Scheme for use with interactive content" as of July 2011.

Scheme is right. You ********. I don't want to watch advertisements in video games, and if I have to you better sell those games for like HALF PRICE.

What's next? Altering books? I'm reading Robinson Crusoe and in the middle of the story the Old Spice guy swims to the island to drop off some deoderant?

@AK - I agree. Something like this would make me rage.

@Dat - I don't know man. We may not have much choice in the matter in the future. I mean look at movies now. Aside from the trailers (which I love) we have to sit through like 15+ minutes of COMMERCIALS now. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of this implemented on the next-gen consoles.

Sony has filed a patent that would introduce in-game ads in a whole new way. First discovered by an eagle-eyed NeoGAF member, the application was posted last year. The patent describes an ad delivery service that would actually interrupt gameplay to display an advertisement. The process would show a warning message indicating that gameplay would be suspended. Once the game is paused, it would show an advertisement. Once finished, the game would rewind "at least a portion of the interactive content," so that you can undo that horrible gaming blunder caused by the abrupt interruption of your gameplay session.

The publisher has been experimenting with a number of unique in-game advertising partnerships. Most recently, it offered MotorStorm RC as a free download to Vita owners, thanks to a partnership with Scion. However, its most criticized ad campaign involved Wipeout HD, where game loads were purposefully delayed to show video ads for State Farm.

As with any patent, there's no guarantee that Sony will ever implement this idea in a real world product. Given the potential fan backlash, it doesn't seem like a worthwhile endeavor to pursue. "The day Sony puts ads up while Im in game is the day ill never buy a Sony console again," one commenter noted on Eurogamer. However, there certainly is an appeal to a completely ad-supported free-to-play game...

I'll be stepping down from video games when it comes then. I have other hobbies. They want me to watch commercials and interrupt my gameplay then they can give me the game. I won't ever buy a game with that sort of intrusive ads.

And Fap, I merged your topic with this one.
