Verizon Iphone Vs Droid X

Hi everyone! I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this yet! Or perhaps nobody cares *cough* sedington *cough*? Anyway, I'm eligible for an upgrade and to sum it up in very few words (because I deleted a couple paragraphs already), I have a choice between the Droid X and Verizon iPhone. I'm sure I'll be happy with whichever one I choose, but I wanted some opinions. Below are some comparisons that will make it or break it for me, but it's a give and take, and these are not ALL differences just the main ones. Kay GO!

- Both take clear pics (8MP for Droid compared to iPhone's 5MP, but the iPhone's images come out more fine) and record 720p video.

- Both are fast, but the Droid is a second or so faster.

- Both can act as a mobile hotspot.

- iPhone operates smoother. It was shown that when you navigate the browser on the Droid, scrolling is slightly jerky.

- iPhone features front facing camera (Video chat FTW!).

- iPhone holds a better screen resolution. 960x640 vs 854x480, but Droid clearly has a bigger screen: 4.3 vs 3.5 inches diagonally.

- Droid has multitouch keyboard along with Swype and voice to text.

- Droid offers unlimited types of apps while iPhone is limited to what Apple approves.

- Droid has 8GB built-in on top of including a 16GB micro-SD card, too, and it can also extend its size to 40GB, whereas the iPhone offers 16 or 32GB.

It seems like both phones are equally powerful and very useful devices, so it comes down to preference and what phone best suits me. Questions for iPhone and Droid users: What are your pros and cons with your phone? The best features and best apps/widgets you have for it? Is it simple to sync the iPhone to your PC? And how does your phone make your life easier, like what do you rely on your phone for?

not from me .. I've had enough of the Apple VS. PC argument. I'm sticking with AT&T because of my fancy jet setting lifestyle, when I go to Canada to visit my mom I'll be able to use my phone without any roaming charges. Last I looked Verizon does not offer global service without a fee

AND I HAVEN'T CHECKED IN OVER A YEAR SO DON'T GET UP MY *** IF I'M WRONG!!!!

Get neither and wait until the new handsets come out this Spring to see how the newly announced HTC, LG, and Samsung handsets will shape up. Also, why get saddled with, what will amount to, a generation old iPhone or Droid for 2 years that will get a refresh later this year? <shrugs> Just my 2 cents.

Honestly. This^^^

I'm all for supporting Droid, but wait for the new handsets which will have the awesome and powerful Tegra2 chips in them.

I've had my phone for four years now (doesn't have internet capability lol) and it's slowly retiring, which is why I would like to get one now. I'll also be attending a handful of press events, so I would like to post updates quickly for the website I write for through a phone. I don't know if I can wait till summer or when these handsets release, but I'll definitely consider it. :) I'm completely neutral with any of these phones and I only chose the iPhone and Droid X because that's what I narrowed it down to.

@coy&chris: what do you use your Droid for? Is it easy to sync with your PC?

I agree with Spawn on waiting. My phone is around 4 or 5 years old and was the cheapest one I could get at AT&T. I know you said you wanted one now and it sounds like you're going to need it but it would likely be best to wait as long a possible. Maybe the iPhone is gonna suck on Verizon's network? .. maybe it'll kick *** .. but it's too soon to tell. Give it a month and see what happens.

Honestly if you're not a Mac user, or iTunes user I think you should consider getting the Droid.

I use my Droid for tons of stuff. Watching youtube. Watching anime (streaming online). Downloading movies to it. Music (downloading MP3s, using free apps like GTunes, RingDroid to make ringtones of MP3s), I have a bunch of emulators on it for SNES and Genesis, playing awesome games like Dungeon Defenders and Angry Birds, messing around with stuff like listening to my local police/ems scanner.

It's VERY easy to sync with my PC. I just drag and drop files and I'm good to go. Some video files I have to use a converter program (like the free download for HandBrake) in order to watch them properly on the Droid, but other than that it's VERY simple. I can't tell you the possibilities that smartphones these days have. It's incredible.

Honestly, as Spawn said though, I would hold off a little while longer. So many new phones are being announced and you don't want to get locked into a phone for 2 years that is going to be exceptionally outdated in a few months. Even my Droid X, as awesome as it is, is going to be sorely overtaken soon with the newer ones with the Tegra2 chipsets. *sad face*

This is actually a pretty good question .. and honestly I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to it. I personally am going to stick with AT&T (I have never had a problem with them, and I can use them in both Canada and the US), and I like Apple products so if and when I finally get a smart phone I'll get an iPhone .. but honestly .. other than the carrier, and accessing Flash based websites, there really doesn't seem to be much difference in the high end smart phones right now.

okay, fine. You guys convinced me to wait, even though CoyAndChris is making me want to go out and buy a Droid X now. But if I come across some piece of important exclusive information at these press events, which I can't communicate to everyone ASAP because I lack a smartphone, I'm coming right back here and e-yelling at you guys. :P Thank you everyone for your input. =]

What if you need to decide between the two within the month?

My plan (ya, I really do have a plan lol, in case I need to purchase one asap) is to wait for the Verizon iPhone reviews and if there isn't anything spectacular about what I already know then I will go with the Droid X. :)

I went to Verizon (cause my mom had to return something) and decided to drill the guy about my Droid X vs iPhone problem lol and he was super nice about it and informative. He gave me the pros and cons of both phones. He didn't down Apple in any way, but it seems like Apple is after all the monies in your pocket! He suggested I should wait till iPhone releases, come in and check it out, and just see how I like it because it seems like my decision will be based on preference. He also said the handsets/4G phones should be released before summer, which he showed me the difference in speed between 3G and 4G and wow, just wow, super fast! OH and he would choose a Droid over an iPhone any day. lol

So ya, I will make it work somehow and wait for the 4G phones. Thanks again guys for your opinions and thoughts.

Lol, I missed this whole debate in here. Umm yea. I love my rooted htc incredible, but would love one of the new htc or other newer android phones when they show.

Android has won me over bigtime... especially after I rooted, but the advice he gave was good. A lot is personal preference. I think android does more and all that, but that doesn't mean it's for everyone.

Most of the important stuff has been said, and I could fill up pages about this subject as I debated for a long time, but I'll let it be.

Looks like you're gonna wait a bit...BUT.

- Droid offers unlimited types of apps while iPhone is limited to what Apple approves.

This right here is what would sway me. Pretty much any advantage one has over the other is marginal, except for the apps that are available (and there are a TON of free, useful apps with more on the way) on the Droid marketplace.

@Pogre That and this: "Droid has 8GB built-in on top of including a 16GB micro-SD card, too, and it can also extend its size to 40GB." Overall, it's obvious that the Droid X is a better buy. Not saying that the iPhone isn't a good product, but it seems the Droid X offers more for its money. Then again I say that now and watch I buy the Verizon iPhone the day it comes out. o_O

  • 3 weeks later...

I run a mac computer since I am a graphic/web designer. Mac simply does it better in that realm. That said, I am not an iphone/mac fanboy by any means but have had the 3gs iphone for the last couple years. Syncing with my mac is so easy to deal with on the iphone. I must say the only limitation to this phone in my opinion is AT&T because of the dropped calls, connectivity issues and other issues I get from time to time. The iphone is a great phone but I don't think you can go wrong with either the droid or the iphone. Both are great in their own way. I am happy with the support for the iphone as well. I got free OS upgrades when the Iphone 4 came out allowing me to use all the same apps Iphone 4 does without having to invest in getting the new phone so I think the phone could at least last me to the end of this year or when the inevitable iphone 5 comes out. My phone still remains fast and responsive.

I wanted to say that no one has touched on the gaming ability vs these two phones. As it stands right now I feel the iphone/ipod has much more choice when it comes to games. There are tons of games. I mean lots of really good games. This developer alone is awesome http://www.gameloft.com/ I feel like the phone is more of a gaming/ipod device first with the ability to make calls. They may regulate their apps more but I think it leads to better quality apps overall. The droid will catch up though on this front soon probably.

Lastly, this thought above leads me into this. The good news is ipod touch can run all the same apps an iphone can. So, I do want a droid for the simple fact that I could have my hand in every tech. Meaning I use a Mac computer at home, PC at work, droid as a phone and an ipod touch for gaming. Seems like a good balance of all worlds. I am definitely considering a droid in the future but I want to see what handsets come out this year. My contract is up soon as well.

Can't go wrong with either. The advice to hold off and wait is very wise. Just a few more months or so of waiting and you will be glad you did.

Thanks vector! And the verizon iphone came out just yesterday I think. I'm so tempted to just grab one right now ^_^ but a friend who works at verizon said to wait at least until March, so I know something is coming out soon!! I'm excited, thanks everyone for convincing me to wait.

I've got to say, I've played around with the Android OS for a few weeks now (On my rooted/hacked Nook Color) and I really like what I have seen. It's fast, intuitive, and has a great "feel" to it. Once all the contracts are up on my current AT&T account I'll be heavily in the market for a new phone and will look at Android handsets first. Hopefully by that time some of the dual and/or quad core processors will be out, as well as Honeycomb (Which I've played with an early build and it's amazingly good).
