Dark Souls' Miyazaki admits to trolling his fans!

I love Dark Souls, and now I love the game and it's director Hidetaka Miyazaki even more. I just read an article about something that definitely made me laugh.

When the game was first coming out Miyazaki gave an interview to Famitsu magazine. In the article they were discussing some of the "starting items" you can select when you create a character. Most of these have clear descriptions of what they offer as a bonus, but one mysterious item listed was a subject of discussion for a long time now.

The Pendant.

Miyazaki in the interview commented that for him personally he'd take "the pendant or nothing at all". This sent the internet into a frenzy for quite a while. What was this pendant? What did it do? What secret did it hold? The great lengths people went through to discover what is was and what it did after the Miyazaki comment went into borderline crazy. Just look at some of this from the Dark Souls Wiki regarding the pendant.

"UPDATE 8: My efforts have given me nothing but Gwyndolin's Soul and the Sunlight Blade, a final farewell of the firstborn to his father, Gwyn. I feel like I've hit a dead end here. My last hope lies in Solaire. I know he returns to the Altar once you've met him in Anor Londo and defeated Ornstein & Smough. Maybe I can find something then. Until then this is the end of my journey. I feel like I've made more foggy connections than answers. But I am convinced that the pendant is linked to Gwyn or his children. I just need to find the link. ... Speaking of links perhaps there is something we can do with the pendant when we face the possibility of linking the flames? ANOTHER TRAIL!

UPDATE 9: OH! Something just occurred to me. Rhea prays in front of a deceased Firekeeper. Either the Firekeepers are somehow related or she is simply praying to the Firekeeper (not the statue) as kindling bonfires are a ritual in the Way of White covenant. In which case it throws my Statue connection out the window."

See this madness? Well guess what? Miyazaki gave an interview to IGN in reference to the upcoming Artorias of the Abyss DLC and dropped a bomb.

"This boss isn't just one of the best fights in the entire Souls series, but carries many answers about the nature of the Dark Soul itself – as well as being, at bottom, a human who goes crazy over a pendant. Sound familiar?

When Dark Souls first came out, an answer Miyazaki gave in a Famitsu interview said he'd choose either nothing or a pendant for his starting gift in Dark Souls. The pendant, which has no in-game function, became a focal point for the wilder elements of the community, and the centre of every conspiracy theory going.

I ask Miyazaki whether Manus is a little dig at the series' more obsessive players. “That is a very interesting consideration,” says the devilish fox. “But I suppose I did not include the meaning.” And as for the original pendant speculation, brace yourselves Dark Soulers for Miyazaki's final word: “When it comes to the pendant, I actually had a little bit of an intention to play a prank.”

I love it. He trolled us all, and drove some internet fanboys to madness in the process.

Brilliant.

The best part is some of them won't believe it and will continue to search for the pendant

There's no search for it. It's a starting item you can take that is completely worthless. No bonuses to anything (like other stuff like some ring that gives you a magic regen boost or something).

I'm in agreeance that some people will search for some connection somehow like it unlocks some secret item, area or storyline lol. People are dumb, but Miyazaki definitely pulled one over on a lot of people. Even I took the pendant at first hahaha
