ThermoNukePanda
Topic says it all. Coy is going to buy me a new video card for my birthday (GAH!!! I'LL BE THIRTY!!! ) I don't know what motherboard I have, so I'll have to check it out when I get home tonight. My quandry is that I need a new card but don't know what will work with my system. I get confused when it comes to what is going to be compatible with the MoBo. I don't know the difference between PCIe 2.0 and 2.1. Right now, all I know is that I have some form of a GeForce9500 (which is a complete steaming soup of diarrhea).I'm looking to spend around $150 so I think I'm looking at either a ATI 5770 or maybe an NVIDIA card of some sort (I've always had NVIDIA cards in the past) Someone care to help me out? I want an awesome card that can run things at ultra settings. I have an HP quad-core system and 8G of ram that I bought about 2 years ago from circuit city. I also don't know about my power supply, so again, I'll have to check when I get home to see what really is in my system.
Skylark95
Ya... when you get home check what power supply you have because that will more than likely be the deciding factor...
ThermoNukePanda
I dont mind buying a new power supply if it's easy enough to switch out. *shrugs*
Dateranoth
If you can swing another 50 bucks I'd also consider the NVIDIA GTX 460 . It averages around $200 and has some pretty good reviews rolling in. I think you would need around a 400 to 500watt PSU for that card.http://www.newegg.co...gtx+460&x=0&y=0http://www.guru3d.co...tx-460-review/

ThermoNukePanda
I THINK it may have a 400w power supply from what I've seen on a few tech forums doing some quick google searching about this out of the box PC. I still need to know what the difference is/if it can support a PCIe 2.0 or PCIe 2.1?
ThermoNukePanda
Hmmm... this says I may only have a 350w.http://www.dealtime.com/xPR-Hewlett-Packard-HP-Pavilion-Media-Center-m9340f-Desktop-PC~RD-449031016068

I still need to know what the difference is/if it can support a PCIe 2.0 or PCIe 2.1?The pci express slot won't matter as long as its a PCI express 16x slot. which will be a longer slot. The best way to find out your PSU size is open the case and look on the side of it. It will have a wattage number on it somewhere. You'll also need either 2 pci express 6 pin power cords or four free molex connectors. They are the middle two connectors in this picturehttp://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageGallery.aspx?CurImage=14-187-112-Z02&SpinSet=14-187-112-RS&ISList=14-187-112-Z01%2c14-187-112-Z02%2c14-187-112-Z03%2c14-187-112-Z04%2c14-187-112-Z05%2c14-187-112-Z06&S7ImageFlag=1&Item=N82E16814187112&Depa=0&WaterMark=1&Description=SPARKLE%20SXX460768D5NM%20GeForce%20GTX%20460%20%28Fermi%29%20768MB%20192-bit%20GDDR5%20PCI%20Express%202.0%20x16%20HDCP%20Ready%20SLI%20Support%20Video%20CardThe single end is the 6 pin ones and the double ends are molex female ends. Ok I'll log off and try to open up the case quick. *grumbles*LoLBrbToo little too late, but, unless you can't get to it without unplugging it, you don't have to power down just to open the case up. ThermoNukePanda
******.350w. *grumbles* Changing the power suppy is not something easy I could do. Swapping vid cards is one thing, but messing with the power suppy is a whole other beast.
ThermoNukePanda
So I guess IF I do end up doing this, I'd have to buy two things from Newegg and bring it to my local PC shop to have them install it for me. (I have a buddy who works for one who will hardly charge me anything I'm sure). So I found 2 power supplies on Newegg that look decent. This looks like a normal one for a decent priceThis one looks coooool but I have no idea how it'd work/fit and I don't need multiple GPUs. ThermoNukePanda
And I definitely saw in there it said PCI Express x16 on the Mobo. Don't know what you mean by "molex connectors"/etc.All I know is I have a 9500GS and it's a pile of steaming crap.

Something like this:http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817702010but be sure to shop around. There are some really cheap ones out there, but be wary of them. They're not always the best and like any cheap component can fail. Only problem is the psu can fail and take other components with it.EDIT:A couple more great deals on good Power supplies.http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6491963&Sku=O261-6324 700 watt for 50 bucks after rebate. Good brand too.and another decent brand 500 watt for 35 buckshttp://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4465483&Sku=C283-1220
ThermoNukePanda
Ok. So I'm going to just ask one of you to do the work for me.Please find me a good PSU and a good GPU that I can purchase. I will have someone else install it for me, but I need some suggestions on what is good/what to stay away from.I'd like to keep it under $310 if possible. *shrugs* I'm getting discouraged. I say this power supply:http://www.tigerdire...AIN#detailspecsThat's a good quality 700 watt PSU for the price of a 500 watt after rebate. and this GFX card:http://www.tigerdire...=E145-0460%20JCGreat card for the price. Plus that one from tiger direct comes with Just Cause 2 for free.278 shipped plus tax in FL, IL, NC, TX, GA, SD and ID -20 MIR258 total Not a bad for an upgrade that will last you a long time AND a PSU that will allow even further gfx upgrade in the future if you decide you need it.EDIT-Your PSU takes up a section in the top back side of the case right? It's not small and sitting in a corner ? Also, unless the guy will do it for super cheap. As in, your time is more valuable then dealing with it. Then I'd do it yourself. PSU looks daunting but its not. Just unplug the things connected to the PSU and remove the PSU via 4 bolts. Pull it out, replace it. Plug everything back in, the connectors only fit the slots they are meant for.
