jb410
Hey, so I've been having some issues with my laptop overheating and crashing, at times I'll have AIM, itunes, firefox, and word open so I've lost data in the past. So i brought it into Staples for a Free Pc tune up. After 1 and half hours of waiting, they said my software was fine, no viruses, and they dusted out my laptop fan. They said though that my laptop's fan doesn't shut off basically and to find out what was wrong would take a $70 diagnostic test. I'm a little tight on cash so I figured why not ask the computer experts here . Anyone have any ideas?
Dateranoth
Your laptop fan not shutting off is not really an issue. An issue would be your laptop fan not running. It's possible they meant it's running all the time becuase it's getting too hot, but it sounds more like they have no idea what they're talking about. Depending on your laptop it could be as cheap as 10 bucks to buy and replace the fan yourself. Shoot some specs this way, and I'll look and see how complicated the process is. Once again it varies, but often times it's as simple as 3 or 4 screws.

Dateranoth
Well, I have some good news and bad news. It is very doable to replace the fan, and the fan is pretty cheap. I'm not 100% sure which one you'll need though:http://www.ecr-intl.com/products/HP/NEW/431448-001.htmlhttp://www.ecr-intl.com/products/HP/NEW/431448-001.htmlThe bad news is that it's doable but you have to disassemble pretty much everything to get to it.Step by Step:http://www.insidemylaptop.com/disassemble-hp-pavilion-dv6500-dv6600-dv6700-dv6800-notebooks/Service Manual:http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01035677.pdfNow, before you get into doing all that or taking it somewhere I suggest testing for sure that it's still overheating. Download Core Temp:http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/It will allow you to monitor the cpu temps. There is other software you can download to stress it, but for now just monitor the temps as you normally use the computer. The absolute max is 95C, at which point it should shut down or maybe not until 99C. If it's getting anywhere near that temp then you probably do have a problem. If it's shutting down without reaching that temp then it is likely something else.
jb410
Thanks a lot man!! I just downloaded that program to see the results. What range is considered normal?
Dateranoth
Thanks a lot man!! I just downloaded that program to see the results. What range is considered normal?Normal is hard to figure. It can vary greatly depending on ambient temp, age, etc. Best bet is to watch the temps ( the program should have a logging feature ) and check to see if it's getting anywhere near 95-99C . As a guess it should run less than 80-85C most of the time. If you want to actively stress the cpu you can download and run this:http://www.overclock.net/downloads/138142-orthos.htmlJust be warned that if it is overheating you shouldn't run this more than once, and if, while running it, you see temps within a few degrees of 95C you should stop the program. jb410
So far I have yet to hit 90. I stay in the 70s a lot and reach into the mids 80s ocasionally
Dateranoth
Well. If your pc isnt crashing anymore then you should be ok. If it is it may be a different problem.
jb410
Yeah, it wasn't really a huge problem I mean it wouldn't always just crash. There would just be times when I wasn't really pressing the usage and it would. It's really not a huge problem but I figured might as well try to fix it seeing this comps gotta last me two more years. Another q tho (srry) is it alright if my fans always on? It always seems to be on like high too. The guy at staples said it was abnormal but then again, it's staples.
Dateranoth
It is abnormal but better all the time then not at all. Ill look and see if there is a fan speed controller this afternoon

It means a lot, I'm just a little worried cause I need this laptop to last me for two more years so I want to upkeep it as much as I can.
Dateranoth
You're welcome. Before we look at slowing down the fan. Can you tell me the temps when the computer is idle and you arent doing anything? Give it a few minutes after boot.

Dateranoth
Yeah right now it's like 38 and the fans going full onHmm. It could just be a bios thing, but I'll look into a fan speed controller for it. See if we can find something that will ramp it down when it's below a certain temp. Dateranoth
You can try opening your bios and checking to see if an option called smartfan is turned on. Will be named that or something similar. You can also try this program:http://www.almico.com/speedfan.phpIt may be able to change your fan speed on the fly.
