Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

"The overall story of the game doesn't really scare all that much, but having to always keep a check on your "Sanity Meter" really does bring a sense of dread to the game. Once it gets low enough camera angles will change, the volume of the game goes up and down, and other random things start to happen that really do screw with your mind. Ghosts and demon fighting is bad enough, but when a game starts screwing with your mind things can get downright creepy. This one needs a direct sequel or HD remake soon."

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly

"Mio and Mayu don't have magical powers or weapons to battle the evil spirits in the village they stumble in to, the only way to fight the spirits is to use your trusty camera. There's nothing like seeing a spirit, whipping out your camera, and having a ghost show up right in your camera lens. Atmosphere, game play, graphics...EVERYTHING about this game is creepy. With 4 possible endings, (One added to the Xbox remake) things don't turn out well, every. Every game in the series is great, but this one stands out to me the most."

The Suffering

"It's part spooky creatures out to get you and part psychological brain twister. I recall one part of the game real vividly that really got to me; I reached a control room that allowed you to use the CCTV's that are setup around the jail you're locked down in. As I'm switching from camera to camera, I come across the one that is in the room I'm in. It's perspective is from behind me about 10 feet. It shows a creature walking up to my back from behind and it's definitely going to attack me. So, you frantically exit the camera mode to turn around.

The creatures in the game are totally jacked up, too. From monsters with blades for limbs, to ones seemingly made from racks of guns and even ones with hypodermic needles for fingers. It may not hold up to today's standards of graphics, but they were good enough to freak you out when it was released."

Resident Evil

"The first time I watched my father play this game I was freaked out. It probably did not help that I was a young pup either. I will never forget when he ran down the hall towards the beginning of the game and those dogs jumped through the glass. I shrieked, well like a little girl. Then when it was my turn to take over the controller and help solve the puzzles, I was too afraid to go through doors, because I always thought the dogs were going to come get me."

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

"This game was not scary as in monster scary, it was mind freakish scary. When I first played this on my Gamecube and my sanity meter started rising causing her to see things or the volume appeared to turned down, etc...I was actually thinking it was me. That game is a classic and needs to be remade or put on the Xbox Live Arcade."

Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams

"Pyramid Head and deranged nurses. 'Nuff said."

Dead%20Space.jpg?m=1320084284

"Well, I'm pretty desensitized and don't find much truly scary, so the only thing that really gets me are the cheap scares. The ones where you're just doing your thing and not expecting a fight, then a REALLY loud noise happens and you are suddenly under attack lol.

So I'd say Dead Space, and to a lesser extent Dead Space 2, are good contenders. Dead Space is a very atmospheric game, especially when played with surround sound. All kinds of deformed beasties await your arrival so they can tear you to shreds. No joke, the only time I really jumped a little, was when a fire sprinkler suddenly activated at over nine thousand decibels (aided by an orchestral horror sound cue, of course) in Dead Space 2. "

Amnesia.jpg?m=1320084448

"I haven't finished the game because I haven't really started it. Honestly a lot of games scare me (unlike movies) because I get so engrossed that it feels real. Amnesia is one of those games that just the atmosphere freaks me out. I would say it is at the top of my list as scariest newer game. Doesn't help that you can't really do anything but run when something is after you.

It's sad really because games like that are fun, and I rarely finish them. I end up having to stop and take breaks so often that it's sad. Either that or play without sound. Great sounds make a great horror game. Guess I get too in character with my games."

Title - Gamercide Reviewer

"I don't play scary games because I get scared tongue.gif, but I'll throw in these two.

F.E.A.R: First Encounter Assault Recon

fear.jpg?m=1320084593

There is something about small children that really gets under my skin. When the HUD starts to flicker, you know something is coming. Alma always seems to show up at just the right moment, in the corner of your eye, a shadow on the wall, footsteps and laughter. All this keeps you anticipating when she might appear next.

STALKER.jpg?m=1320084702

S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat

While not a horror game in the truest sense, the atmosphere in Call of Pripyat is neck deep. Trekking through an abandoned city, 5 bullets left in your assault rifle, hoping you can make it to camp. Or a race against time to survive an emission, when radioactivity floods through the Zone. Taking cover in a nearby bunker only to crawl into a dark corner and listen to the sounds of beast moving around in the blackness is a great experience. "

There you have it. The top list of games that made us here on the Gamercide staff sleep with one eye open. Happy Haunting!
