Ok All,

 

The time has come. I should get a decent tax return this year and I want to build a new gaming computer with it. First off I run Mac right now but my biggest problem is not being able to run much of any games at all. It is disheartening! I have built a couple gaming PCs long long ago and know that it will be easy for me to do it again. Those Devry classes when I was really young were not a total waste after all :)

 

With all that said I am trying to put together a component list that I will start buying over the next couple of months. So the first thing I did was surf the net for what others are doing and I came across this:

 

 

Looks interesting and he gives a full component list if you go to youtube and click "show more" under the about section. I also like that price considering I will need a new copy of windows and a new monitor to go with it.

 

What do you guys think of his build? Any big limitations you see.

Sounds all right to me, but I'm not a big fan of the minis. Might just be, but I never feel the minis provide enough air flow. Even with the pro-est of custom cut cables, braids and other sorcery. lol

 

Dat was showing a viewer on our live stream a custom DYI build that could be put together on a PC site. I was pretty jealous when I saw it, since I had just bought my 1k PC and it was just as good for way cheaper.

 

*edit* Let me also just say that I am excited you're putting one together. I'll have another Borderlands co-op partner!

Yeah mini seems cool in theory but don't want to have air flow probs. I should check out Dat's build. I don't mind spending a bit more if it makes sense.

 

Thanks for the support it will be exciting to have a Borderlands partner! It will be fun to game with you all again! I want to get into another MMO as well :D

You can mix and match between the builds, but a lot of it largely depends if the $1000 budget includes the monitor and all that or not.

The builds I linked in do not include monitor or OS. I have not included monitor or OS or any other peripherals in the 1k build so yeah it will be more like $1,000 - $1,500 somewhere. $1,500 would be my absolute max but I don't think I will need to go that high since I have some things already.

 

Considering that a new iMac would cost me $2,000+ for the one I want it is not so bad. Plus whatever PC I build should be quite a bit above the current iMac's specs anyway. I have been somewhat preparing for the day when I would need a new system. I am going to go with windows 8.

In my 1k I had both an SSD and a 1 TB drive.

 

I think initially I will just get something like a 128GB SSD and wait on any additional drives. I can always get those later. I plan on putting the OS and games on the SSD in hopes of better performance. I have a big external drive I could use for storing things that don't need to be on the SSD. That should help with the budget a little but not a ton.

 

Do you think an SSD helps all that much performance wise though?

They do build some decent stuff. I think Kevin got one from there, maybe?  But I'd stick to building your own if I was you.

 

Yah nothing like building your own and knowing exactly what you have. Plus it is not overly difficult. I will keep an eye on their website though in case they have some blowout sale.

I would like to add to dats comment about ssds. They are fantastic and probably the best speed upgrade you can get for the money. The prices are slowly dropping so now is the best time to buy one. My computer starts up in 3 seconds flat on windows 8 and all my work programs (photoshop, sony vegas and other misc things) launch in a few seconds where a standard moving drive would take longer.

Building your pc instead of buying a "custom" pc is always best if you plan on constantly opening it up and adding stuff to it and making it look unique and pleasing you. 

 

If you need examples of peoples builds you should ask them :D I will be happy enough to share my budget build that cost me 700 dollars to make and is just an amazing little thing. 

Another note, if you really love macs and cant be without the OS, there are things called hackintosh's. Its basically a computer you built but with the Mac OS installed on it, you just need to make sure you have compatible parts for that build.

 

One more thing, get a full tower case, it may be more expensive but its definitely better because of improved air flow, more room to cable manage and you can add a lot of stuff in it compared to a mid tower case.

Yeah I would love to see your build for $700! Please share! I was thinking of trying to get mine down that low. I figure the most expensive and at the same time most important components for gaming are gonna be the CPU and GPU. What do you think of Mid-Tower vs Full-Tower?

 

Oh also I am not married to Mac anymore. For the past 5 years I was really digging it but I really miss the ability to run any program or game i want. Mac is great but a PC can fill all my needs and them some. I think I was just bored and sick of windows before. Windows 8 has me interested.

I suggest getting all your parts at the same time, don't get your parts every month, as you want to test the parts as soon as you get them! Hard drives tend to come dead in the mail a lot and you don't want to find out a month or two later after buying it!

 

NOTE: This is an intel build not an amd, if you want true budget get AMD.

 

The parts for my pc are getting really cheap now so it will probably cost even less! And a lot of my parts are the same ones you picked!

 

Please note, this build should not be overclocked at all and its made to be constantly upgraded in this order 

 

psu > gpu > core > ram

 

SSD and heatsink are things you most likely need so you can get them in any order.

Hard drives are cheap today so i dont have to link you them, they go for about 60-70 bucks for a terabyte

Estimated cost is 829 dollars! 

 

 

PLEASE NOTE

Without a full tower case this build would cost around 750 dollars. 

 

Look around on the internet and find out what you want! This is your computer and its your money that you are spending, make it your own and take your time looking for the right parts. A lot of the stuff like the motherboard and the cpu can easily be swamped out for something cheaper.

 

One more note, newegg is a few dollars more expensive because of the amazing customer support. They have free return shipping if a part is defective, all you have to do is call the support center.

Decent build there. I think it's worth spending money on at least a 550 watt or more psu. Corsair is a good series though. I say that mainly because its a part that should last a while. Especially since they will degrade some over the years. It's worth it to me to have it there waiting so you don't have to worry about a bigger size if you upgrade in the future.
