GameStop Facing Possible Legal Trouble For Tampering With New Games Over Competitor Coupons

Gamers who purchased the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution from GameStop found out the hard way that they did not receive the promised OnLive code that was suppose to be included with each new copy of the PC game. It’s being reported that once customers got home, cracked open their “new” game, the code was not there, and GameSpy has uncovered an email that circulated to GameStop employees telling them to open each new copy of the PC version of Dues Ex and remove the OnLive code without telling potential buyers. Why do you ask? The following statement from GameStop public relations representative, Beth Sharum sums it up pretty well.

“Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons,” Beth Sharum, GameStop Public Relations Rep. in a statement to GameSpy.

For those of you that do not know, GameStop gained rival company Spawn Labs and Impulse which is a similar digital download service as OnLive this past July. Does this give GameStop the right to tamper with new games and remove competitor coupons? If you ask me, hell no and I agree with GameSpy who claims that GameStop may have set themselves up for an impending legal battle for tampering with purchases of new games without consent and knowledge of the buyer and then selling them as new.

What the hell is wrong with GameStop? I'm always hearing about them opening up new games. If you drive a car off the lot, it loses much of its resale value. The same should stand true for videogames, if you buy new. Did they crack it open? Less than new and discount!

If they had a problem with the content, they should have taken it up with the company and not hindered their customers in ANY way. We didn't do anything wrong.

What's ridiculous is that GameStop is acting like an immature child with removing a code that PC gamers were expected to receive because they can't handle the competition. What a bunch of cry babies!

This is the number one thing I have always hated Gamestop for. They have on several occasions tried to sell me 'new' games that were already cracked open. I always refuse. If it's not in the shrink wrap still I don't buy it.

Exactly! Even more BS is Deus Ex is linked to steam. So pretty easy to open those up and get the key. I've moved most of my purchases to best buy or amazon.
